LoranoCarter+Oakland is a Chicagoland area outreach program Working with Law firms and Judges to help victims of prostitution, drug addiction, and homelessness.

Message of Hope and Inspiration

Lorano Carter has a message of hope and inspiration for Mansfield, Ohio.

"I'm from Oakland, California. I'm here to tell you that it's not over until you say it's over," he said. "You can make it out of any situation."

Carter spoke at the Richland County Juvenile Court on Tuesday during a hearing for 16-year-old Jaquan Parker, who is accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Jontez Taylor in October.

 

"If he could get through this, so can you," Carter told Parker.

 

Carter, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in California, said he was once in Parker's shoes. He was also 16 when he was accused of killing someone. But unlike Parker, Carter was tried as an adult and convicted.

 

"The system is not perfect, but you have to work with what you have," he said. "You have to stay positive and don't give up."

When I first moved to Oakland, I was immediately struck by the LoranoCarter+Oakland sign. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before, and it really caught my attention. I later learned that Lorano Carter is a local artist who has been making a difference in the lives of Oakland youth for years. My name is Mansfield, and I am a young man who was born and raised in Oakland. Growing up, I always felt like there was something different about me. I wasn't sure what it was, but I knew that I didn't fit in with the other kids at school. When I saw Lorano's work for the first time, it finally clicked for me.
